For non-Americans here.....from the outside looking in, does American christianity?

I am an American, but my husband is from the UK. We discuss this a lot. He says that this country has changed dramatically in the last 16 years. Religious fanaticism has risen, but so has decadence. I am not talking about ual decadence, but selfishness, obsession with entertainment, materialism, and lack of respect for others. I won't even go into our imperialism. Its been eye-opening for me to visit Europe and South America and see our country through their eyes. I do not think the fundamentalist christian attitude is the cause, but just another symptom of our sickness. It makes me very sad.
