Replacing the tank on my gas range?

I seldom use the gas range in my kitchen. However, I have run out of gas. Can I use the gas tank from my bbq grill until I have the large tank filled? It's the same kind of gas just a way smaller container. Also, someone mentioned "vacuuming" when the range has been out of gas for a prolonged period of time. What's vacuumed? My large tank? or the lines that run from the outside tank to the range? Any advice? Is this advisable?
